The History of Waiāhole Elementary School
Waiāhole Elementary School is a special school rich in history, tradition and culture. Established in 1883 during the reign of King David Kalākaua, Waiāhole Elementary is one of the oldest and smallest schools in the Windward District. During the 2023-2024 school year, we celebrated our 140th year of educating keiki (children) in Waiāhole Valley.
When our school first got its start, we initially served “to educate the valley’s rural population, offering farming courses as well as standard subjects” (Chang, 2013 Waiāhole: The Little School That Could). We continue to strive towards providing a quality education and safe environment for our school of approximately 118 students in Grades Pre K-6, many of whom are children and grandchildren of those who attended Waiāhole many years ago.
