Principal's Welcome

IMG_5672.JPG

At Waiāhole Elementary School, it really does take a village to help raise and support our keiki together. I am so honored and privileged to have an ʻohana and community that help us to support our keiki and school. As the school year comes to a close, I just wanted to take some time to highlight some of our amazing activities and events that happened this school year.

Our school year started off with our annual corn planting and harvest.  This activity has been taking place for over 25 years and continues to be a favorite activity of our keiki. We also had our annual Halloween parade which was tied to a favorite literacy character. There were so many creative costumes. In November, students in Grade 5/6 organized our Turkey Trot. In February, we had our annual Heart Challenge which keiki also enjoyed.

Our year ended with our annual Cardboard Carnival and kuʻi kalo. These are definitely two of my favorite events that we have at Waiāhole. As our Grade 6 keiki get ready to transition to middle school, keiki please remember who you are and where you come from. We are looking to you to make your mark in this world.

The Rich History of
Waiāhole Elementary School

Waiāhole Elementary School is a special school rich in history, tradition and culture. Established in 1883 during the reign of King David Kalākaua, Waiāhole Elementary is one of the oldest and smallest schools in the Windward District. During the 2023-2024 school year, we celebrated our 140th year of educating keiki (children) in Waiāhole Valley. When our school first got its start, we initially served “to educate the valley’s rural population, offering farming courses as well as standard subjects” (Chang, 2013 Waiāhole: The Little School That Could). We continue to strive towards providing a quality education and safe environment for our school of approximately 115 students in Grades PreK-6, many of whom are children and grandchildren of those who attended Waiāhole many years ago. This is Waiāhole Elementary School’s second full self study visit.
