HONOLULU (KHON2) — One of Hawaii’s oldest public schools celebrated 140 years of educating youth on Oahu’s windward side.
Waiahole Elementary School was founded back in 1883 under the reign of King David Kalakaua.
Today, it has 124 students from pre-K to sixth grade.
A free family-friendly event was held on campus this afternoon with live performances, food trucks, and even a petting zoo.
The school’s principal credited the community for taking care of the campus and students.
“Small school, big heart and I wouldn’t have it any other way,” said Waiahole Elementary School Principal Alexandra Obra. “I couldn’t have done it without everybody. The community, the ohana, the teachers and staff, parents, everyone came together to make this fundraiser work.”
